![]() ![]() Skill within your profession has a far more profound effect on combat effectiveness, and the fantasy that every soldier should be tested based on fake combat tests does nothing but reduce the efficiency of the army as a whole. There exists this fantasy that the fittest soldier is the best soldier, and for the vast majority of military history that isn't true. Pushing logistical support out because they can't throw a ball or a cyberwarfare officer because she can't deadlift more than her body weight is idiotic. Thats fine for the 85% of the army who's job isn't direct combat. The APFT was a baseline test to see if your troops were in decent shape. The army has continuously been at war for the last 20 years, and that situation has happened about 4 times to people not on the front lines "The sled drag simulates dragging a buddy out of a firefight" Great. The vast majority of soldiers are not combat arms, and making a test conform to fantasy ideas about what combat is like does nothing but fundamentally weaken the Army I realize that no test will ever be perfect, however I feel like the ACFT has left its initial guiding principles by the wayside in order to bump up pass rates. Tier system (Platinum, Gold etc) is kind of cool to see how you stack up against the army at large, but again it does nothing to weed out unfit individuals from MOS, which was an initial reason that prompted ACFT creation. Does not at all help weed out unfit individuals from an MOS that requires significant physical exertion. Job specific? No longer, as all job/MOS related requirements have been removed. Minimum standards of 10 hand release pushups (in two minutes) and 1 leg tuck are so pathetic that it enables higher pass rates for the test at the cost of having a test with any fitness integrity in its scoring scale. Is the ACFT still gender neutral? Yes, however the "standards" have dropped to incredibly low levels to ensure passing scores. I think it's funny that two of the core tenants that prompted the ACFT creation have lost their way along the path to implementation.
